Opening date: 15.05.1935 The station was opened as a part of the first Moscow metro line section.
Station design: three-vaulted deep-level pylon-type station with cast-in-situ lining built to an individual design.

The pylons are faced with red, grey, white and yellow marble. The floor of the platform hall is made of grey and black granite. The model of the station was exhibited at the 1938 World's Fair in Paris, where it was awarded a Grand Prix. In 1952 the first Moscow Metro turnstile was installed at this station and on July 27, 1959 the first turnstile enabling passengers to pass free was tested there. The south vestibule is a shell-like building designed by N.Ladovskiy. The north vestibule, built into the ground floor of the 138-metre skyscraper in Lermontovskaya ploshchad’ (architects: A.Dushkin, B.Mezentsev, engineer V.Abramov), was opened on July 31, 1954.
